One More Things from Su Tong's Talk

As I was telling Meng about the lecture last night, I remembered one more thing that Su Tong had said.

He was talking about the loss that comes from the development. I think that is also an important thought that applies to every kind of situation when there is some sort of change or development. That as a place changes the memories get lost as well. This kind of loss in general is necessary, but you also should put some consideration into the places and the memories that you lose for the sake of development.

I think this is also quite similar to immigration. To some extent, you are changing and becoming another person. Much of what comes from your past, you also need to lose. For example, you may need to give up your language or some holidays or some closeness to family members, but you also change who you are in the process. It is important to be selective and not give up everything, but realize that you need to find ways to also hold on to the past.

That was one thing I think China is not paying enough attention to. I am not sure how much we should expect people to hold on to when it comes to modernization. I do not think we as a society took into consideration all of the changes that took place from the Industrial Revolution now. It is also not something that we take into consideration, and yet the world is changing at a rapid pace.
